Leon's Johnson is a complete player
Leon's Alex Johnson is known for her play at the net, having smacked 340 kills this season. But she's also one of the Big Bend's most complete volleyball players. She can block, dig, pass and serve — and she has helped lead Leon to within a victory of a fourth straight trip to the state tournament.
"You don't get a lot of hitters who are good all-around," Leon coach Joy Becker said. "She's one of our leading blockers and diggers. She was our leading server against Buchholz (in the regional semifinals)."
Leon travels to face old friend Niceville today at 3 p.m. in the regional finals. The Lions (23-5) have knocked off Niceville the last two seasons in the regional playoffs.
Niceville enters the match with an unblemished mark of 28-0.
Becker praised Johnson for her leadership and consistency. Johnson has 242 digs, 46 aces and 39 blocks in her senior season, and she has already made a commitment to play volleyball at the University of Miami.
Becker said Johnson is quiet and caring, "one of the sweetest kids I've ever coached."
But that all changes on the volleyball court.
"Her nickname has been Mouse," Becker said. "It's just not the animal that you think of. The lion definitely comes out of her on the court."
