Pirates sweep Bruins
MURDOCK -- In practice this week, the Port Charlotte girls played the song "Lean on Me" quietly in the background during a team talk. On Wednesday night, that's exactly what they did.
Each of the Pirates players took turns with both their highs and lows, creating a balanced attack strategy which ended with a Port Charlotte sweep of visiting Bayshore (25-19, 27-25, 25-18).
"We seem to play really well in spurts," Pirates coach Rodney Taylor said. "We did it tonight. ... In spurts, we played some of our best ball. But that's the way it is. If one girl is having a rough night, somebody else does well and picks them up. It rotates around."
Someone who was on all night was Holly Krzeminski, who had a match-high 11 kills in the sweep. The senior outside hitter possessed an uncanny knack to know just where to drive the ball, and when. Sometimes her decisions were made mid-air, and change a kill to a tip.
The Bruins (2-9) struggled to defend against her as well.
"Holly reads both sides of the court really well," Taylor said. "She knows just when to change up her shots. She's got power, finesse, and she can hit to any spot she wants."
Just behind her in the assault was junior Taylor Eiken, who had nine kills. Chassity Taylor and Kierston Smith added seven and six kills, respectively, in the victory while Laurin Walczyk registered five to create the balanced offensive front.
Smith, the team's setter, was equally deadly from the service line. The junior served eight consecutive points during the final game, six for aces. It was the key to clinching the match, and swung the score from a 13-all tie to 21-13 in favor of Port Charlotte (7-2).
The Bruins gave the Pirates little trouble throughout the match, which had its most dramatic moments in a 27-25 game two. Port Charlotte led by six at 19-13 when a rash of Pirate errors combined with spot-on attacks from Bruins hitters Lilla Lukacs and Katelynn Smith boosted Bayshore to a 24-23 lead.
Krzeminski, Eiken and Walczyk each had kills down the stretch.
Despite a few errors at critical times which pushed the game to extra points, the Pirates played a sharp, clean game. The miscues decreased from 14 in the first game, to 11 in the second and nine in the third.
"Our goal is to eliminate errors altogether," Rodney said. "It's something we work very hard at."
