Bulldogs taking on tough competition

DeSoto High's volleyball team could find out just how good it is when it plays Southeast and Charlotte this week.

The Bulldogs will travel to Southeast for an important 3A-11 contest at 7 p.m. tonight. Thursday, DeSoto will host Charlotte in a non-district match at 7 p.m.

"We need to beat Southeast to stay tied for first place in districts," DeSoto head coach Dave Bremer said. "Charlotte also is an important match."

DeSoto is 7-1 in district action and 11-4 overall. The Bulldogs defeated Southeast the first time the teams played. DeSoto has split with Cardinal Mooney, losing the first match and winning the second. DeSoto, Cardinal Mooney and Southeast are far ahead of the rest of the teams in the district.

Charlotte won its own invitational Sept. 26 and is a young team that has come on strong lately.

The Bulldogs continue to get good play from their hitters. In a three-game victory over Hardee last Tuesday, Amanda Mercer garnered 12 kills and Shelby Flint made 11. In another three-game victory Thursday over Booker, Mercer had 11 kills and Flint made eight.
